Achieving racial equity in research

On June 10, 2020, Elizabeth "Betsy" Cantwell, Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation, wrote to the Office for Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) community to make clear that University of Arizona would take steps over the next year “to work toward creating a more equitable environment in STEM.” This began with a 4-part series of conversations with the campus community, resulting in a set of recommendations towards achieving equity that was presented to senior leadership in November of 2020. With a deep and pressing sense of responsibility, RII expanded our commitment to anti-racist programming and resources, seeking meaningful outcomes to move us forward in addressing racial equity in research. We recently released an update on progress in Lo Que Pasa, and will host a ‘Convo with Cantwell’ on 9/27 at 1:00 pm where panelists will discuss our progress in more detail and answer questions about next steps.

In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to add information to this website. We are working with Ivy Banks, Associate Vice Provost of Diversity & Inclusion, to finalize RII’s inclusion, diversity, equity & access (IDEA) plan, including benchmarks, and intended outcomes and will make RIIs efforts transparent on this website. We will also post resources to assist the campus community in becoming actively anti-racist, with a focus on research environments, as we work to shift the campus community towards one that has made significant movement towards achieving racial equity in research. If you would like to participate in this effort, please contact us.
